as a conference facility for the Catholic Diocese

staff at the centre are very friendly and the

Namatanai, 263 kms south of Kavieng, is the second
largest town and the administrative headquarters
for the southern part of New Ireland. It is the
major gateway to the Lihir Island gold mine just
offshore. From Namatanai you can link to the west
coast to catch boats to Kokopo in Rabaul. Usually
PMVs leave Namatanai between 3am and 5am for Kono.
Here you can catch the Kokopo banana boats at
around 7am for the 2.5 hour trip. (K70 in 2006).
You can also fly into Namatanai from Kokopo with
Airlink. Contact Abraham Alapi at the Tourist
Office in Namatanai on 984 3179.

This Guest House is a couple of kilometres out
of town in a quiet and pretty area. Guests can
be picked up in town at their office (the owners
run a trucking business). The accommodation (2
rooms) and common areas are all clean and new
as it was only opened in September 2005. There
is a self catering kitchen which is clean and
well-equipped and the bathroom is well appointed
with a western-style toilet and a shower. It does
not have a generator so lighting is with lanterns
only. The gardens surrounding the guest house
are lovely and there is a pleasant Haus Win for
sitting and enjoying the garden.

Bino Guesthouse
The Brent Bino Guest House is right in the centre
of Namatanai town near the hotel, supermarkets
and bus stop. It has 6 rooms and is very popular
with tourists. The rooms are all very clean and
well equipped with fans, nice beds and tables
and chairs. There is a comfortable sitting area
with a television. The single bathroom is adequate
with a western-style toilet and shower. The place
is well maintained, comfortable place and very
secure. Guests are normally advised to obtain
their meals from the hotel but there is a very
clean and well equipped kitchen in the complex

Uniting Church Guesthouse
This guest house in Namatanai is currently (mid-2006)
under construction using bush materials. There
are two rooms and a guest kitchen will be available
on one end of the building and a relaxing area
at the other. The toilet is a drop arrangement
some distance from the rooms and a bathing area
is yet to be constructed. It is very close to
town and is a reasonable option for budget travellers.

Located near Tembin/Kontu Villages on the west
coast of New Ireland some 4 hours drive from Kavieng
it is home to some of the most famous shark callers
of New Ireland Province:- Salem Kasimbe, Olde
Blasiuis and Obed Kumaragam. Its situated
right on a beautiful sandy beach, a short walk
to a river and about 15 minutes walk to the village.
Its quiet and safe here and the people very
friendly. There is a single bungalow made of traditional
materials. Two twin rooms and a triple room. Mosquito
nets. Generator power. Toilet but no shower; bathe
in nearby creek. Activities besides swimming,
snorkelling and fishing include watching traditional
dancing and world renowned shark-calling, plus
for the more energetic bush walking to waterfalls
and caves.

Homestay
Kono Homestay at Kono village is across New Ireland
south-west of Namatanai. It is an ideal stop-over
for travellers going to/from Rabaul (Kokopo) by
banana boat. PMVs leave Kono for Namatanai between
7am and 8am (K10) where regular onward transport
to Kavieng is available. The homesaty is just
50 metres from the beach. The house in which guests
are accommodated has 2 rooms for travellers and
electric lights. Fridge powered by a generator.
Mosquito nets and towels provided. Basic drop
toilet and bucket bath only. Nearby is site of
German holding cell prior to black-birding.
There is shark-calling also.
