Namatanai, 264 kms south of Kavieng, is the
second largest town and the administrative headquarters
for the southern part of New Ireland. It is the
major gateway to the Lihir Island gold mine just
offshore. From Namatanai you can link to the west
coast to catch boats to Kokopo in Rabaul. Usually
PMVs leave Namatanai between 3am and 5am for Kono.
Here you can catch the Kokopo banana boats at
around 7am for the 2.5 hour trip. (K70 in 2006).
You can also fly into Namatanai from Kokopo with
