New
Ireland has over 149 islands and is part of the
Bismarck Archipelago, which also encompasses New
Britain. The mainland of New Ireland runs NW-SE
and is approximately 300 nautical miles long.
The islands off both the east and west coasts
of New Ireland offer an amazing destination of
incredible diversity.
The islands and the mainland host plentiful sheltered
anchorages in all weather conditions. This remote
and beautiful island group can be explored by
boat, and really are a journey back to an ancient
time. Anchorages are available in some of the
most idyllic locations imaginable, and the adventure,
freedom and simplicity of a live-aboard yacht
charter is possibly the best way to explore this
area, and experience a fascinating culture largely
unchanged for thousands of years.

The
North Western islands with their friendly people,
white sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, pristine
coral reef systems and rolling surf are an unspoilt
paradise. They offer an incredible opportunity
for discovery and adventure, or just simple relaxation.
Many of the palm-fringed islands contain picturesque
villages and the largest island called New Hanover
(Lavongai) has spectacular river systems, waterfalls
and mountains.
This is a world-class sailing charter destination.
Surfing in this area is excellent, and deserted
waves await.
Water quality and clarity is second to none,
and as most of the islands have fringing coral
reefs, the opportunity to snorkel at a different
anchorage each day is a reality.
The clear waters around the many islands are
among some of the richest fishing grounds on earth,
providing a real opportunity for those keen to
catch perhaps that fish of a lifetime. Or maybe
for those happy enough just catch their dinner!

Shallow
draft vessels like catamarans are a big advantage
in the lagoons and reef passes, plus they offer
exciting sailing on passage between islands. They
are the ultimate in freedom and access to this
remote cultural wonderland. Experience the untold
marvels of this region in style and comfort as
you cruise from island to island diving, snorkelling,
surfing, fishing and experiencing the rich local
culture.
New Ireland doesnt have any bareboat style
charter vessels, however skipper and crewed sailing
yachts are available. The area is well chartered,
but some local knowledge is very handy to find
the best places to be with the conditions at the
time.
Island hopping is very popular with the sailing
tourist. A sailing charter is one of the only
ways to visit the traditional villages on the
outer islands, where they have had little contact
with the outside world. Island lifestyles in the
region are still totally subsistent from the sea
and land, so people can be observed carrying out
traditional practices of fishing, farming or carving
dugout canoes.

The
weather in New Ireland is very sailing friendly.
The SouthEast trade wind provides a steady sailing
breeze from mid-May through until late October,
averaging 10-15 knots. The winds during the remainder
of the year are more variable due to the North
Pacific monsoon season, and are more often from
the North at variable strength. And although the
winds are not often very strong, they are consistent,
with the area laying outside the equatorial doldrums.
Also as the area is only around 2 _ degrees from
the equator, we do not experience cyclones or
typhoons.
The port town of Kavieng may be familiar to the
cruising fraternity as it is often visited by
yachts in the South West Pacific area. The port
has slipways and dockside facilities for fuel
and provisioning vessels, and excellent anchorages.
